Hello everyone! It’s now April, which means that it’s officially Earth Month! If you weren’t aware, April is termed “Earth Month” because International Earth Day always falls on April 22nd. Last year, we celebrated Earth Day with some fun facts about the day’s origin. This year though, seeing that the year’s theme is “Invest in Our Planet”, I thought it would be fitting to look at some simple ways we can all do exactly that! So, without further ado, here are 10 ways you can celebrate Mother Earth all month long!
- What better way to invest in our planet than to first learn about its rich history first? There are plenty of ways to do this – as an avid reader, my favorite way to immerse myself in environmentalism education is through books. I made a list of some great books to read a while back, but if you’re looking for more concise information, I have an “Environmentalism 101” series I’ve been consistently adding too!
- If you’re more of a visual or auditory person, consider watching some nature documentaries or listening to some podcasts / radio shows! With so many out there, there’s sure to be something for everyone. I personally love watching documentaries and seeing firsthand what beauty our planet is home to. There are plenty available on Netflix and Disney+! When it comes to podcasts, make sure to check out Earth.org’s favorites!
- If you’re still looking for something else, consider tuning into EarthDay.org’s “Earth Week” seminars. Starting on April 14th, the organization will hold daily livestreams on various topics concerning environmentalism, with everything from ending plastic pollution to getting in touch with public officeholders! This will be a new annual tradition going forward as EarthDay.org aims to “[amplify] inspiration and action… worldwide”. You can find more information about the events on their website.
- Something I constantly stress is the importance of spending time in nature – sometimes, we get so caught up in fighting for the planet that we forget to take a step back and enjoy what it is we’re fighting for in the first place! Now that the weather is slightly warming up, it’s a great time to take a walk, visit a park, have a picnic, take a bike ride, or whatever it is that you like to do! If you don’t do any of these, at least consider going outside for a few minutes and taking in a few breaths of fresh air, especially since we’re all so cooped up inside now!
- Going along with relaxing, make it a habit to seek out good news about the environment! We’re all so used to hearing about our impending doom day after day that it can be hard to remember that good things actually do happen! I have an ongoing series of periodic positive updates, but if you’re looking for more, make sure to check out GoodGoodGood.co – as the name suggests, they’re dedicated to providing their readers with good news!
- As we all know by now, environmentalism is nothing without action. I find the best way for individuals to do this is by getting involved with a local or national organization, whether through donating, volunteering, or anything in between. It can be a great experience for you and your community members!
- If you’re looking for something smaller to do, consider planting a tree, picking up litter, or seeking out projects in your community like a local garden or compost bin! Better yet, if you notice your community doesn’t have something like this, why not try something new out and help benefit your local environment by starting them yourself?
- Another fun outing to consider is going to a local farmer’s market! You’ll help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transportation, support your local businesses, and acquire some real fresh food! Make sure to take your reusable bags with you though!
- Something quick to do at home is giving yourself a fresh start with some spring cleaning! With your friends and family, you can go through all of the stuff you have at home, like clothing, snacks, or just about anything else you have a collection of, and either repurpose it or donate it! This way, you’ll always know what you have on hand, which can really help promote some sustainable shopping habits.
- If this all is too much for you, don’t fret, for you can still make a difference! Part of my mission here at “From One Human to Another” is to provide my readers with endless ways through which they can make small changes in their daily lives that can have a positive impact on the environment. You can check out some free resources, support brands committed to sustainability, and so much more here!
Well, that’s all for today! Hopefully this list has inspired you to invest in our planet – I know what I’ll be doing this week! If you do decide to celebrate Mother Earth, make sure you do it with those around you, since our real strength lies in what we can do together! Until next time, everyone! Happy Earth Month!
Thanks for some great ideas!
